CHECK-IN LOT’s JFK Business Class Check-in was quick and efficient, as expected. As I usually travel with carry-ons, I was appreciative of the dedicated premium class security line, where the queue was short and I passed through quickly. Within just a few minutes I was in the Lufthansa Star Alliance member lounge ready to relax and choose from the ample selection of snacks, soft drinks, cold beer and other assorted spirits.

BOARDING Business class passengers were boarded first and I was quickly at my seat. What impresses you as you first enter into the Dreamliner is the mood lighting. The light blue overhead gave the feeling of being in the outdoors. Immediately, the tension from the busy day and airport routine melted away as I nestled into this relaxing and welcoming space.

The business class cabin was open and airy. As a die-hard carry-on guy, I particularly noticed the spacious overhead storage bins and the hydraulic hinges for smooth operation. The next thing I noticed was the large windows with their five dimming levels, from clear to dark for sleeping. The tinting of each window could be controlled by each window seat passenger or the cabin crew, if necessary.

Boeing engineers have done an amazing job with noise reduction inside the 787. I found the cabin noise so low that I forgot to put on my noise-canceling headphones. This is usually the first thing I do on takeoff, as I find that whether I’m reading, working or just relaxing, it’s all the more pleasurable to mute the typical intrusive aircraft “white noise” that permeates the plane. To think that I had been on this plane for nearly 3 hours before I even thought about donning the headset is a testament to a truly more relaxing flying experience.

THE SEAT The Elite Club seating arrangement on this Boeing was three rows of 2-2-2. There was plenty of space between the rows and in the aisles. I found the lie-flat seating had more than enough room for my 6’ frame. The only trick being on the window is stepping over your neighbor to get to the aisle when they are in the lie-flat position. Everyone else in Elite Club had direct aisle access.

Each seat had a 15” screen and three sockets: a USB port, power supply for mobile devices and a port for headphones with noise reduction. There was a good selection of movies, sports, news and TV shows available.

THE FLIGHT Within moments of arriving at my seat, the attentive flight attendants immediately welcomed me, stowed my suit jacket and offered water, orange juice or champagne. When we reached cruising altitude, the staff served up a variety of wines and cocktails followed by the evening meal. Outstanding Polish gourmet restaurateur, Magda Gessler created the menu, using the best local crops and bringing a refreshing lightness to traditional Polish cuisine. The evening meal offered several options including roasted chicken breast, preceded by slices of smoked salmon with artichokes and crunchy seasonal salad. While the dinner portion could have been a bit larger for my bigger appetite, the food was good.

The lie-flat position was to dream for: Cushy mattress, with white sheet and blanket, and an oversized pillow, all set the stage for a comfortable rest. Talk about the value of some precious sleep on the way to Europe. I was surprised to learn when I woke, that I’d slept for nearly three hours, uninterrupted!

ARRIVAL Although everything about the flight went well, the weather wasn’t cooperating. Heavy fog in Warsaw diverted our flight to Gdansk, and the delay caused me to miss my connection, the only LOT flight that day to my final destination. As it is with business travel obstacles, this hurdle made me a bit anxious. Well, the LOT staff exceeded my expectations. Without negotiation or arm twisting, they were ready with a solution, and quickly got me on an alliance partner airline enabling me to arrive at my destination that same day.

VERDICT The LOT Dreamliner was a pleasure to experience; I arrived in Europe rested and refreshed, ready for business.
