BACKGROUND The Valley Wing is one of three wings of the Shangri-La Singapore, located among some of the city’s most elegant addresses. The oldest wing, The Tower, opened in 1971 as the original Shangri-La Hotel, followed in 1978 by the Garden Wing with its distinctive bougainvillea-laden balconies.  The 17-story Valley Wing opened in 1985 and underwent substantial renovation in 2003.

WHAT’S IT LIKE? The shops and nightlife of Singapore’s chi-chi Orchard Road are a short walk from the Shangri-La – very convenient if those activities happen to be on your list – but the lush quiet 15-acre site is a world apart. The Valley Wing where I was booked is separate from the rest of the hotel, with its own entrance and a reception area that features magnificent chandeliers and exquisite art.

Of course décor alone does not the stay make; it’s the extra level of hospitality that really made my experience remarkable.  Valley Wing guests flying into Changi Airport are greeted by Shangri-La’s dedicated airport concierge and chauffeur-driven to the hotel. When I arrived I was greeted by Nora, my guest relations officer.  I say ‘my’ guest relations officer because during my stay, she was a constant source of information and help; it was almost like I was her only guest – which is the way fine hospitality is supposed to work.

ROOMS My Deluxe Room was a gracious 600 square feet, decked out with charming architectural features. The window overlooked the pool area so I got to enjoy lots of green vistas throughout the day; the other side of the hotel offered stunning city views which are especially lively at night all lit up.

The marble-clad bathroom was huge, with a soaker tub and a shower with a generous rain showerhead.  One feature I appreciated was the bedside lighting controls which included subtle night lights that could be turned on and off without leaving the comfort of the bed.

RESTAURANTS AND BARSSince the Garden Wing is connected to the rest of the hotel and all its dining options, I don’t have enough space to do justice to everything – but I’ll do my best: The private Summit Room serves complimentary daily breakfast just for Valley Wing guests. There’s Japanese at Nadaman, Cantonese at Shang Palace and Italian at The Waterfall.  But if you only have time for one, check out The Line in the Tower’s lower lobby.  Way beyond just a buffet, it’s a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, multi-culinary experience.

MEETING AND FITNESS FACILITIESAnother advantage of Shangri-La’s size is its over 60,000 square feet of meeting and event space.  The hotel offers 18 function rooms and two grand free-span ballrooms, plus beautiful outdoor venues and several more intimate indoor spaces.

The 24-hour health club overlooking the swimming pool, koi pond and waterfall has a range of equipment from free weights to treadmills.  The hotel is also home to Singapore’s first CHI, The Spa. Here skilled therapists use natural products and authentic treatments to return you to a feeling of well-being and personal vitality.

VERDICT Hospitality doesn’t just happen; it takes planning, a sense of comfort and style, and a sharp eye for what guests need.  Shangri-La Singapore offers all of these in abundance in an elegant, comfortably luxurious setting.
