Houston announced record growth in 2013 and is poised to see additional increases in 2014 and beyond.  Billed as the fifth largest U.S. metro area, by Korean Air VP, John Jackson (see previous Business Traveler article), the city is seeing a lot of growth.  And Korean Air has already announced a new route in to  Seoul, Korea beginning in May of 2014. Air China and Turkish Airlines both launched nonstop service in Houston in 2013, flying to Beijing and Istanbul respectively.  Air China recently expanded their Beijing route, moving from four flights per week to daily service as reported in an earlier by Business Traveler.

The combined passenger totals from both airport facilities is up 1.2 percent over 2012 — from 50.3 million passengers to 50.9 million passengers in 2013.

8.9 million of the passengers walked through the doors of George Bush Intercontinental Airport, which is up from 8.7 million in 2012.  However, the bulk of the growth came from Hobby whose traffic was up 6.4 percent. 11.1 million customers entered the gates at Hobby in 2013 compared to 10.4 million in 2012.  The close-in location makes Hobby a preferred airport by many Houstonians.

"We are entering a very exciting period in the rich history of Hobby Airport," says Houston Mayor Annise Parker.  "Passengers are enjoying the results of a $350 million renovation program, international air service will be in place by 2016 and the facility is seeing more passengers than ever before.  It's a very exciting time."

The city is poised for more growth as Hobby looks to host international service in 2016.  Bush Airport already serves 68 international destinations and the numbers are growing.  The future looks bright for Houston.
