Scoot, the low-cost carrier and subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, has chosen the Embraer E190-E2 aircraft to help unlock its expansion plans in the Asia-Pacific region.

On Tuesday, March 23, the Singapore-based airline confirmed that it will take delivery of nine E190-E2s to add to its growing fleet. The deal was first announced in February, and the aircraft will be delivered to Scoot via a lease agreement with commercial aircraft lessor Azzora, which currently holds a backlog of Embraer aircraft in its fleet of 77 airplanes.

The Singaporean low-cost airline, established in 2011, currently operates flights to 66 destinations across 18 countries but plans for significant expansion.

The 112-seat narrowbody jets will add to Scoot’s fleet of 48 aircraft, including 10 Boeing 787 Dreamliners and five Airbus A320neos. However, these smaller, single-aisle aircraft from Embraer will help Scoot operate more short and medium-haul routes to lesser-served regional airports.

Scoot is scheduled to take delivery of its first E2 aircraft in 2024, with the remaining eight planes to be delivered throughout 2025.

“The agreement to include nine new E190-E2 aircraft in our fleet allows us to continue operating a modern and fuel-efficient fleet, and support our network growth strategy by serving thinner routes to non-metro destinations out of Singapore,” said Leslie Thng, CEO of Scoot.

“As the first Singaporean carrier to operate the E2s, we are excited to be working with our partners at Embraer to improve our network connectivity and increase travel options for our customers.”

John Evans, CEO of Azorra, said: “We are thrilled to support Scoot and its exciting expansion plan to serve more short and medium-haul flights across Southeast Asia. Scoot’s selection of the E2 is a resounding endorsement of Embraer’s E2 product line and the crossover segment. With the addition of E2s, Scoot becomes the first Singapore-based airline to operate crossover aircraft, demonstrating the emerging capacity rationalization trend amongst operators globally.”

The E190-E2s are one of the latest aircraft models to be released by Embraer and were first introduced by the Brazilian aircraft manufacturer in 2018. Several airlines worldwide use E2s in their fleet, including KLM, Azul, Royal Jordanian, and TUI. However, Scoot will become the first airline in Southeast Asia to take delivery of the jets.

The aircraft will also help Scoot to meet its sustainability targets, thanks to its state-of-the-art aerodynamics, wing design, and innovative technologies, which help to deliver a 25% reduction in carbon emissions compared to the previous generation of Embraer jets.

“We welcome Scoot as the region’s first major operator of the E2,” said Arjan Meijer, CEO of Embraer Commercial Aviation. “The team at our APAC headquarters in Singapore is proud to support the airline in its quest to enhance connectivity and growth in the region, supporting the further development of its Singapore hub.

“This is the value the E2 brings to airlines – complementing larger narrowbodies to grow and maintain networks. Passengers will enjoy the unique comfort of Embraer’s signature two-by-two-seat configuration and modern interior. Work is already underway to prepare for the aircraft’s entry into service.”
