The City of Seoul Presents a Blueprint on the Promotion of Tourism & MICE for ‘the Era of 20-million-Tourists'

The city of Seoul has announced a blue print on the intensive promotion of tourism and MICE industry, which shall lead the future of Seoul as a growth engine of high added value. They have disclosed the preparation for the era of twenty million tourists beyond ten millions.

Consolidating Seoul's status, as a model city that will lead the world tourism and businesses, the plan shall be carried out to vitalize the economy of Seoul and to increase the job creation.

This blue print reflects latest tour trends such as the increase of individual tourists rather than a group and the expansion of mobile information demand; and includes a characteristic of the administrative philosophy so called, ‘Participation by Citizens & Cooperation of Private and Government’.

For example, the city shall discover historical resources of a city of two thousand years led by residents to create storytelling, which in turn will make Seoul a favorable place of foreign tourists' continuous visit to every corner of the city.

In addition, the city shall maximize the use of IT technology, which is the Seoul's major strength, to operate a cyber tour from which people can get tour information and experience the tour beforehand while walking with smart phones.

By the year 2020, for a drastic growth of MICE industry, namely the tour project in business fields, the city shall expand the exhibition & conference infrastructures to the size of one hundred eighty thousands ? that is three times the present level. The city also shall support institutions with maximum one hundred million won who shall host the international conference, and companies and travel agencies with maximum fifty million won largely expanded from current twenty million won who shall host the conference by company and the incentive tour.

Also, for the first stage, by the year 2018, the city shall promote itself as "Urban Convention Area" through the integration of tour resources of the center of Seoul such as DDP, Seoul Train Station, Downtown Hotels, and Myungdong, etc. For the second stage, by the year 2020, considering the existing international conferences, the infrastructures for exhibition (MICE), the accessibility of transportation, and the foundation of industry, the city shall create the East South district area of Samseong-dong and Jamsil, etc. as ‘a complex for international conference and MICE industry’ which combines conference, exhibition, accommodation, shopping, culture, and entertainment. For the third stage, the city plans to push forward a step-by-step promotion plan which induces the installation of facilities related to international conference and exhibition (MICE) such as hotel and conference room to support occupying companies inside Magok area that has been created for the high tech industrial complex focusing on R&D.

Through this, the city of Seoul has set a goal to increase its world level of tourist number to fifth from the present eleventh level by the year 2018, and to advance itself to the world three major cities from the fifth in the rank of international events hosting city.

With regard to this, at the 2013 General Conference of Seoul International Business Advisory Council(SIBAC) in last October, the mayor Park, Won-soon extensively announced the?2014~2018 Seoul Tourism & MICE Master Plan?

The Master Plan of Seoul Tourism includes four major policy tasks and twelve core projects such as ?Creation of the Whole Area of Seoul for Storytelling ?Smart Tour Information using High-Tech and Abundant Tour Infrastructures ?Convenient Tour & Service Enhancement ?Industry of High Added Value and its Linked Promotion, etc.

Also, in order to secure the competitiveness in day by day intensive hosting competition among worldly renowned cities for MICE industry such as international conference and exhibition, and etc., the city shall together push forward ?The Seoul MICE Industry Promotion Plan? which includes five major policy tasks and ten core projects such as ? Expansion of World Level MICE Infrastructures ? Discovery of Potential Demand for MICE and Expansion of Hosting ? Expansion of MICE Added Value ? Promotion of Global MICE Events ? Reinforcement of MICE Ecology.

The mayor Park, Won-soon said, "’as said in the proverb, an opportunity can bear fruit when it comes to a prepared mind', through this master plan of Seoul Tourism & MICE Industry, the city of Seoul will move up the era of 20-million-tourists and thereupon lead economic growth and job creation”.
