American Airlines (AA) will begin operating its new B787-8 aircraft on the Chicago–Tokyo Narita route from August 18. Tickets are now on sale.

AA currently flies the route five-times weekly, which is unlikely to change, however with the B787 due to replace the incumbent B777-200 aircraft, this will mean a loss of the first class cabin on the route.

The B787 comes with a two-class layout with 28 seats in business class and 198 in economy, of which 57 have been designated as Main Cabin Extra seats that offer superior seat pitch.

Despite the lack of first class, the B787 offers AA’s latest cabin products, which includes flatbed business class seats as opposed to the B777’s angled business seats.

AA’s decision to deploy the B787 onto its Chicago–Tokyo Narita flights is surprising given that the route is heavily served by other carriers such as ANA, Japan Airlines and United. It appears that the carrier is looking to compete with the other airlines by offering quality seat products, at an expense of overall capacity.

Currently, AA is flying the Dreamliner between Dallas and Chicago as part of an ongoing crew familiarisation process, but has already detailed the international services to follow.

Economy class

The airline is set to commence commercial B787 operations on its flights between Dallas and Beijing from June 2. Then two days later, it will deploy the aircraft on the Dallas–Buenos Aires route, with flights between Dallas and Shanghai to follow on June 26.
