BA confirms LA as first A380 route

British Airways has confirmed that LA will be the launch destination for its first A380 aircraft from this October.

Back in July last year forum poster LHRTraveller speculated that the carrier would launch its superjumbo on flights to LA followed by Hong Kong, and this has now been confirmed by the carrier.

The superjumbo will be rostered onto the Heathrow-Los Angeles route from October 15, with tickets on sale from today.

BA will then add the A380 to its Hong Kong route from November 15, with tickets also on sale from today.

Note that these routes will not be the carrier’s first commercial services with the superjumbo - BA is set to take delivery of its first superjumbo in July, and said that “A380 enthusiasts eager to be on the very first commercial services should note that dates for these will be announced once plans for training flights are completed”.

To celebrate the launch BA is offering World Traveller return tickets to LA for £499 (£559 for Hong Kong services), with the option to upgrade to World Traveller Plus for an extra £380, and Club World fares starting from £3,800 for two people.

BA has also added a dedicated A380 webpage to its website, and has posted a You Tube video showing CGI footage of the aircraft's interior (click here to view the video).

How long is the flight time to LAX, compared to a Boeing 747?

Looking at timetables in October, the 747 will take 11hrs15mins from LHR-LAX, the 380 11hrs5mins - so you save a whopping 10 minutes of time.

According to recent polls in BT, LA is only 4th in ranking for the most popular launch destination, more than three times as many people preferred Hongkong. But what does BA give for the preference of her premium passengers? See also cabin layout! How can such decisions materialize whithout takeing the customer's preference into consideration?

I have seen a lot of traffic elsewhere about whether the BA A380 will have nose/tail/belly cams for passengers to watch at all / any stages of flight that they wish. Does anyone know?

My guess would be that the 380 will have them, but BA won't let passengers watch them as every other airline does. I sort of get the sense that BA feels it has to do things its own way in a misguided sense that everyone else has it wrong except themselves.

Maybe BA are scared to let passengers see how wobbly their pilots are at hitting the centre line and taxiing around the place. Emirates, Etihad and a host of others are not embarrassed about their flight crew abilities.... can't imagine why BA should be, don't BA flight crew have the best training in the world?

Before there are the usual screams that the exterior cams are boring and low resolution, well, those that are bored don't have to watch t/o, approach and during taxying do they? Neither are the latest ones that I have see on the A380, 777ER, A340 and A330 etc low resolution.
