The U.S. Department of Transportation has approved six domestic airlines to begin scheduled flights to Cuba beginning in the fall of 2016.  The carriers approved are American Airlines, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Silver Airways, Southwest Airlines, and Sun Country Airlines and the marketing has already made its way to Facebook and Twitter.

“Last year, President Obama announced that it was time to ‘begin a new journey’ with the Cuban people,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx.  “Today, we are delivering on his promise by re-launching scheduled air service to Cuba after more than half a century.”

The US departure cities are Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Minneapolis/St. Paul.

The current agreement will allow each country to operate up to 10 daily roundtrip flights between the U.S. and each of Cuba’s nine international airports.

A decision has not been made at this time on flights to Havana.  Twenty daily roundtrip flights are currently planned for Havana and the U.S. and over 60 flights were requested.  DOT says a decision will be announced over the summer.

It’s rare when new markets open to the US and this is one that has been sought after for many years.  This is truly an exciting time in the market.
