VERDICT Completely remodeled, this “OC” hotel has created the kind of atmosphere that appeases business travelers and conferees while also serving as a spot for locals to pass through for a lively happy hour or shop at its extensive Marketplace featuring locals products at typical street prices.

Hotel Irvine Marketplace

BACKGROUND Many might remember the hotel as the Hyatt Regency Irvine, but these days, it is sporting a much more design-inspired décor. Expect plenty of outdoor lounging areas, a redesigned interior with plenty of natural light and bright colors, and an emphasis on relaxation and recreation.

WHERE IS IT? Just a five-minute drive from Orange County John Wayne Airport, the free shuttle whisks guests from their plane to the room in a jiffy. Within walking distance of numerous office towers, residential buildings, and shopping, this is a popular destination for a variety of travelers.

WHAT’S IT LIKE? This is a playful place through and through. It begins with the chilled water stations and patio area at the front of the property where guests can relax while waiting for valets to bring around their cars. Along the reception desk, guests will find glass jars of vintage and unique candies to snack on while they check in. This type of vibe is seen throughout the hotel including in the artwork and among staff attitudes.

ROOM FACILITIES Rooms all have bustling city views albeit some face the mountains to one side while the others have interesting views of the airport in the distance. Accommodations feature calm color palettes of grey, beige, and pastel hues of green and yellow.

Hotel Irvine corner suite

Pillowtop mattresses feature bedside power outlets and USB ports plus vintage alarm clocks. Spacious desks add more power outlets and modern stereo speakers. Flat-screen cable TVs face the beds while coffeemakers and refrigerators are tucked into cupboards beneath them. Full-length mirrors, armchairs with ottomans, and wide closets are thoughtful touches. Many rooms feature sliding glass doors that open to terraces, and suites add separate living areas with second bathrooms or dining areas. Bathrooms stock Essential Elements toiletries, thick towels, hairdryers, and makeup mirrors. Club 12 is one of the hotel’s crown jewels as it is a flat fee that can be tacked onto any room rate, which is in contrast to larger chain hotels that only provide access to elite level travelers or those booking certain room categories. It features a heavy continental breakfast each morning and evening snacks with a rotating menu that features everything from burgers to soup and grilled cheese. Wine and beer are also complimentary, which is quite unique to club lounges in the U.S.

RESTAURANTS AND BARS EATS Kitchen & Bar is the main eatery at the hotel serving three meals a day.

Hotel Irvine Eats Kitchen

It is popular with both guests and locals or business folk that work in the neighborhood. Breakfast serves some decadent options ranging from cheesy omelets to the famous Cinnamon Crunch French Toast worth making a detour for when hungry. Business lunches and evening happy hours are a great spot to chat with clients or fellow colleagues. In fact, the hotel’s Red Bar and Lounge has a lively happy hour with great prices on wine, beer, and tapas to share (we’re talking $2-5). Dinner can be enjoyed by the fire pit or in the dining room with dishes like thin crust pizza (California style), Dungeness crab lettuce wraps, ahi poke salads, and burgers piled high with tasty toppings. The Marketplace is like a high-end grocery store with everything from prepared sandwiches and salads to craft beer and healthy snacks. They are priced like a local grocery store, and there is even café-style seating nearby for guests and locals to chill out and enjoy the free wireless Internet. There’s even 24-hour delivery to guest rooms from the Marketplace.

LEISURE FACILITIES The swimming pool is almost always in the bright sunshine and features cushioned lounge chairs and shaded cabanas. A bar serves refreshments and snacks, and a whirlpool bubbles along to soothe tired muscles.

Hotel Irvine Treat Trike

The fitness center is well-equipped, but a more exciting way to explore the area is by borrowing one of the hotels bikes to cycle around town. Basketball players can hit up the hotel’s own court.

BUSINESS AND MEETING FACILITIES The hotel features excellent meeting facilities from boardrooms to ballrooms that can be partitioned into smaller rooms. There’s even an outdoor venue that can be used for large social functions and events with overflow space to a palm tree-lined garden and reception area. This hotel offers some of the best meeting facilities in the neighborhood, which is partly a result of the hotel’s boutique attitude. Free wireless Internet is available throughout the hotel including by the pool. There’s also a business center with Internet-equipped computers and printers.
