VERDICT A favorite of corporate guests and politicians, this is one of the closest hotels to Parliament and enjoys some of the best views as it towers over the city. Its club lounge and excellent restaurant earn high marks from repeat guests, and its city-center location keeps rooms full during the week and weekends alike.

BACKGROUND This hotel has enjoyed a long reputation as a solid choice for those with business to do at Parliament or any of the downtown office buildings. Its former rooftop, revolving restaurant has been converted to meeting space, which makes it popular for social functions and events.

WHERE IS IT? The hotel is close to several new subway stations set to open soon, and is only a couple of blocks from Parliament. Shopping in Byward Market is only a ten-minute walk away.

Marriott Ottawa Hotel Byward Market

WHAT’S IT LIKE? Its façade shows off the design ethos of architects many decades ago, but its interior décor will surprise you with polished surfaces and bright lights illuminating modern furnishings. The lobby lounge and bar opens to reception giving the public areas a constant sense of activity.

ROOM FACILITIES Guest rooms show off the standard look of the refreshed Marriott room concept. This means fluffy white duvets, thick pillows, bedside power outlets and alarm clocks, and armchairs by coffee tables. Perhaps the second most important feature in the room (besides the pillowtop mattress) is the wide desk with a slew of power outlets and connectivity cords that allow you to charge up devices and sync them directly with the large, flat-screen cable TV. Bathrooms come stocked with Bath & Body Works branded toiletries, thick towels stored cleverly on shelves tucked away, and makeup mirrors. Guests on the club level are treated to complimentary breakfast, all-day drinks, and evening cocktail receptions in a private lounge, open seven days a week.

Marriott Ottawa Hotel Spin Kitchen and Bar

RESTAURANTS AND BARS Starbucks is always available at the coffee shop, but the SPIN Kitchen & Bar is the main event when it comes to dining and drinking here. It takes its name from the Canadian capital’s constant political activity and the “spin” that politicians often take on policy announcements.

Tour around the dining room to see historic photographs of notable Canadian legislators with quotes and memories from their tenures. The lobby lounge serves plenty of local craft brews, and the casual dining room offers a plentiful breakfast spread with intercontinental fare later in the day. Pay particular attention to the effort paid to showcase Canadian cuisine. Many of the ingredients are sourced from the surrounding region.

LEISURE FACILITIES An indoor swimming pool (come on, this is Ottawa…you didn’t think it would be outdoors?!) is heated and available all year-round. The modern fitness center is equipped with cardio and weight equipment, and maps and directions in the lobby are available joggers looking to explore town on foot.

BUSINESS AND MEETING FACILITIES There are 26 individual places to gather with groups, the largest of which holds 600 people. Corporate groups and conferences are common, often making use of the hotel’s plethora of audiovisual equipment, but social functions prefer the revolving rooftop space for incredible views of the city and river no matter what the time of day. Free wireless Internet is available throughout the hotel for anyone that joins the Marriott or Starwood loyalty program.
