CONTACT Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay, Savusavu Road, Momi Bay, Nadi Fiji, tel 679-670-7000, http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/nanmc-fiji-marriott-resort-momi-bay/

WHERE IS IT? This resort is 45 minutes from the country’s main international airport. Taxis are super expensive, and the best bet is to book a shared or private transfer from a third party, which can shave off quite a bit from the transfer rate. Unlike other resorts of this caliber, there is no separate boat transfer.

WHAT’S IT LIKE? Positioned by the entrance is the hotel’s welcome drum team that performs a traditional Fijian arrival to greet travelers after their long journeys. Prepare yourself for a hearty handshake and welcome with chilled towel and drink at check-in. Spread across the bay, this resort offers a bit of everything from overwater to single and double beachfront bungalows.

ROOM FACILITIES Accommodations are quite varied here, and golf carts run guests to and from the lobby. They consist of the famous overwater bungalows that are perhaps the most popular option here. Located in the lagoon, they lack some privacy given that guests in the oceanfront bales can see into the bungalows, but they are still unique. Guests can take dips directly from their bedrooms into the lapping waves. The oceanfront “bales” (either single units or duplexes with thatched roofs) are quite spacious as well and feature gorgeous views surrounded by swaying palm trees. High ceilings and traditional lamps create a special ambiance while all the units boast the same modern amenities.

These include flat-screen cable TVs that swivel toward the pillowtop mattresses with duvets, strong air conditioning and whirling ceiling fans, refrigerators with free bottled water, coffeemakers, full-length mirrors, and spacious closets that open to large bathrooms. The conference center helps to fill the traditional guest rooms that are part of the main buildings that front the swimming pools and dining areas. Bathrooms sport excellent water pressure in showers and deep soaking tubs while Thann toiletries stock the vanities. No matter where your room is there are furnished balconies or patios to enjoy the evening breeze.

RESTAURANTS AND BARS Goji Kitchen and Bar is the main buffet outlet open for most meals, which is quite impressive.

At breakfast, there’s a noodle station, omelets are cooked to order, and the tropical fruit is quite fresh. Breezy seating faces the lagoon area and the waterfront bungalows in the distance. The buffets are a fantastic way to sample cuisines from various exhibition kitchens, and theme nights include everything from Fijian to Indian. The Fish Bar by the adult infinity pool serves fresh sushi and grilled fish for lunch and dinner. This is the most popular spot for sunset cocktails before meals while the Lagoon House & Bar is known for its Mediterranean fare including a pizza oven and homemade pasta. During the day, its swimup bar is a busy spot. Lagoon Lounge offers signature cocktails overlooking the bungalows, and grab-and-go deli sandwiches and pastries are a favorite at Fiji Baking Company. Marriott elite members enjoy complimentary coffee drinks daily in addition to other perks like free wireless Internet and welcome gifts.

LEISURE FACILITIES Where do we start. There’s an adults-only infinity pool, which is perfectly positioned to enjoy the sunset. This is a popular spot with couples and even has a shaded whirlpool tucked into the zero-entry pool.

Covered cabanas line the edge of the pool. On the other side of the property is the family pool, which stretches across the edge of the resort featuring a swim-up bar, crisscrossing bridge leading to the small beach, and plentiful lounge chairs facing the lagoon. A fully equipped gym offers all-hours workout equipment plus a lavish spa with massage and beauty treatments. The private jetty gives guests access to a variety of watersport activities, which are available directly from the resort grounds. Daily activities include a variety of things from fish feeding to henna tattoo and water polo, and brink your tennis rackets because the hotel has several courts.

BUSINESS AND MEETING FACILITIES After passing through the private entrance, guests will discover the conference center that can cater to large groups without swarming the main resort with crowds.

Another perk of this separation is that groups find more opportunity to convene rather than getting lost amid the overall resort. Free wireless Internet is a standard here, and it works magnificently including on the beach and by the pools. There’s a separate parking area for the conference center, and large groups can book into conference center room blocks that are closest to the meeting facilities.

VERDICT As the most impressive offering on the main island, this is a popular new Marriott resort that deserves attention for its overwater bungalows and exceptional service. While the magic of Fiji extends to its outer islands, the Marriott Momi Bay Resort is a bucket list spot for many travelers, especially those looking to earn and redeem Marriott Rewards points.
