WHERE IS IT Across from the main post office in the center of the city’s prime shopping and tourist center, this luxury hotel enjoys a prominent position from many vantage points. It is within walking distance to many of the city’s sites, and the drive to Paro International Airport should take about an hour.

WHAT’S IT LIKE? The entrance courtyard and welcome greeting from staff signal that the Taj brand of luxury is alive and well here. A bright lobby has colorful seating, which gives way to a lounge for cocktails. Smoking is not permitted in public areas; in fact, the sale of tobacco is prohibited in the country. The way travelers plan their trip in Bhutan is through local travel agents, which is a government requirement, but it is possible to book any hotel with their assistance. I organized by stay with the help of TravelLocal.com, which coordinates curated visits to countries around the world. The company specializes in crafting the perfect itinerary by using local agents and guides (Heavenly Bhutan comes highly recommended) that can show travelers exactly what they want to see.

ROOM FACILITIES Colorful area rugs with regional designs cover the polished hardwood floors, and walls feature Tibetan and Bhutanese artwork and artefacts. Lattice work panels separate the bedroom and living room area with excellent views of the city, forest-covered hillside, and Himalaya mountains. Oversized beds feature thick duvets, bedside power outlets, and individual reading lights. Desks have international power outlets and individual wireless Internet routers providing free access to all guests (with an option to pay for premium speeds). Deluxe rooms are quite sizeable, and the best of them comes with small balconies while the Luxury category is known for its sweeping valley views and Buddhist-inspired murals. Marble-lined bathrooms feature sliding wooden panels that open the bedroom to the bathroom for more natural light.

They have deep soaking tubs, robes, Forest Essentials toiletries from India, and above-counter sinks on a spacious vanity. A handful of suites provides extra living space, but it is the duplex units that are most popular with families and those wanting the most privacy.

RESTAURANTS AND BARS The Bhutanese cuisine at the hotel has a strong reputation across town with both guests and visitors regularly dining at Chig Ja Gye, which opens for dinner daily. If you’re not sure what to order, tasting menus make it easy to sample lots of local flavors.

All-day dining at The Thongsel offers buffet fare at breakfast and international dishes for lunch and dinner. Sunday brunch is a real treat. Guests can also order up light dishes along with cocktails or the country’s famous butter tea in the lounge. Ara, named for the famous Bhutanese liquor made from rice, serves fine wine, local beer, and a long cocktail list with live music on occasion.

LEISURE FACILITIES A lovely spa features separate relaxation areas for men and women with steam rooms and showers while an indoor swimming pool and whirlpool are quite popular with guests. Cushioned lounge chairs provide a place to chill after enjoying an ayurvedic massage or beauty treatment.

VERDICT Bhutan’s government is following an ideal known as “gross national happiness,” which rather than something it exports, it is a spirit that it wants to create within its borders for both citizens and visitors. Taj Tashi follows this practice quite well; it’s seen especially through its cheery staff that are proud to welcome visitors to Bhutan.
