Not liking your current job is a real drag. It makes it difficult to go into work each day with a smile on your face. It may be that you’re not a good fit for the culture, or you are ready to embark on a new career. No matter the reason, it’s good to recognize that you’re unhappy.

The next step is to take action. There’s no reason to sit and sulk and feel sorry for yourself. People change jobs all of the time because of various reasons. All that matters is that you believe in yourself and come up with a game plan for leaving your current situation. See how to prepare for getting a new job.

New Job Ahead

Decide it’s Time for A Change

Your first step in the process is deciding that it’s time for a change. You have to want it and be determined to stop at nothing to get it. It’s going to take a lot of time and energy and you have to be prepared to hear the answer no. Take a look around you and make sure leaving is really what you want. Make a list of the pros and cons and analyze the real motives of why you’re departing from your current company. It may be just what you need to get properly motivated to take your leap of faith.

Research your Options

It’s a smart idea to research your options and see what’s out there before you start applying. This is your chance to completely switch careers or stick with the same line of work and simply move companies. Look at all of the different careers that are out there and what may be a good fit. Don’t assume you’re pigeonholed into one industry because that’s what you’ve always done. Go online and brainstorm various ideas for where you can go next in your career. This is the time to be open to new possibilities and not be afraid to remove yourself from your comfort zone.

Determine Career & Location Possibilities

Narrow your list down to a few career opportunities that you gathered from your research. Dig a little deeper into each and figure out what skills and background you need to apply. This is also your chance to move locations and start over somewhere fresh. Landing a new job is a great way to get yourself from one place to another. Look at the big picture when you’re doing your homework and start answering these type of questions early so you bring yourself to the right conclusion in the end.

Take Stock of your Skills

Think long and hard about your experience and what you’re good at in your job. Make a list of your skills and all you’ve contributed to your various companies over the years. Your background is what’s going to help qualify you for the new position. Take notice of why you’ve excelled at your current job and where there’s room for improvement. These will be appropriate answers to share when you’re interviewing for a new position. Focus in on your strengths and try to match them up with a new role that you believe you’re qualified for and can excel at if you were to get the job.

Talk to an Expert

It’s okay to reach out and discuss your situation with friends, family and an expert. Professional life coaches and career coaches are there to support you and help guide you to the right decision. They’ve seen it all and have been through these discussions with lots of other professionals prior to you. Listen to what they have to say and take their advice seriously. This doesn’t mean you have to decide the fate of your future while you sit there, but it’ll help give you direction and the opportunity to problem solve. It’s a chance to get your questions and concerns off of your chest and leave feeling a bit more organized and confident in your choices.

Update your Resume

While you’re exploring, it’s also a good idea to get your resume updated. Do this by using resume writing services to help you stand out from the crowd. They tailor the sessions to your specific needs at your career stage. This is the kind of support you want to turn to if you’re serious about your career. All of their resume writers and career coaches have experience as executive recruiters and/or hiring managers, so they know how the professional job market really works. They use that knowledge to give you a real edge in your career. This is what you need to walk into an interview feeling your best and like you’ve done all you could to prepare.

Practice Interviewing

It’s a good idea to practice interviewing ahead of time. Go online and come up with different scenarios and questions the hiring company will likely throw at you. Write down your answers and recite them in the mirror or practice with your spouse or a friend. Ask for feedback and take their critiques to heart. The more repetitions you get in the better you’re going to feel as you approach the day of the interview. The more you practice, the less nervous you’re going to be on your big day. You can usually find some of the questions they’re going to ask you by searching the Internet and seeing what past candidates have to say.

Relax & Have Fun

Most importantly, remember to relax and have fun. If you’ve done your homework and feel confident the day of the interview, you should be in good shape. Keep in mind that you’re interviewing them too to make sure it’s a good fit for your next career move. Come in with your own questions and challenge them to impress you too. Remain calm and confident and you should have nothing to worry about.

These are tips for helping you land your next dream job. Changing careers isn’t easy, so take your time and be patient with yourself. This is how to prepare for getting a new job.
