Record-breaking numbers at London Airports in August

Four of London’s major airports reported record August traffic, with Gatwick, Luton and Stansted seeing their busiest ever months.

Heathrow welcomed 7.5 million passengers during August, up 2 per cent on the same period last year, and the second busiest month in the airport’s history.

UK and Middle Eastern destinations performed particularly well, recording a 6 and 7 per cent increase respectively.

Meanwhile Gatwick welcomed 4.9 million travellers last month, up 2.1 per cent and the largest ever figure for the airport.

A total of 8.1 million passengers travelled through the airport over the seven-week summer holiday period, with long-haul destinations recording an 11.1 per cent growth compared to last year. The biggest growing long-haul destination at the airport was Fort Lauderdale, followed by St Lucia, Oakland and Varadero.

Luton saw 1.6 million passengers pass through the airport in August, up 6.8 per cent and the 41st consecutive month of growth for the airport.

A total of 4.7 million travellers passed through Luton between June and August, the busiest summer in the airport’s history.

Finally Stansted welcomed 2.7 million passengers in August, its busiest ever month and 9.9 per cent up on the same period last year.

The airport’s 12-month rolling total to August stands at 25.4 million passengers, up 6.4 per cent on the previous 12 months.
