VERDICT TAP Portugal is undergoing a renaissance of its own with new aircraft coming online, refreshed inflight products, and a growing network that makes it a top choice for connecting Europe and Africa with the Americas. Its business class cabin features local cuisine, and the clever “sardine can” lookalike amenity kits show just how creative the airline is willing to get to win customer satisfaction.

CHECK-IN Lisbon’s international airport is bursting at the seams, but TAP makes it easy for its business class passengers to avoid the masses by checking in at four dedicated counters in a quieter part of the terminal. Look for counters one through four. Soon, passengers are on the way to the airport’s main lounge for local wine, olives, and sandwiches while they await departure.

Plans are nearly complete to reopen TAP’s own dedicated lounge, which will be a much-needed improvement. Keep in mind that travelers must clear immigration before boarding, and lines can be long so leave time between the lounge and boarding.

BOARDING Separate lanes for business class and elite member customers are in place, and since TAP is a member of Star Alliance, there is usually a large number of people in the premium line. Still, the process is efficient. Be sure to keep in mind that the lounge is before the immigration checkpoint, which can have bottle necks at certain times of day. Luckily, American passport holders can use the automated kiosks, which can save time. Once onboard, flight attendants offer newspapers, magazines, and a choice of water or sparkling wine.

THE SEAT TAP Portugal has two products flying at the moment: the 2-2-2 configuration of angled lie-flats (which are soon to be retired) and the 1-2-1 configuration, which goes fully flat and is becoming the airline’s standard.

Luckily, I was on the latter, and more and more travelers will be privy to that as the carrier takes deliveries of new Airbus aircraft. The seat folds completely flat into a bed with your legs tucked underneath the table of the person in front of you. The staggered seating of the cabin means that everyone has direct aisle access, and window seats alternate between having the seat closer to the window or closer to the aisle (the former are recommended for privacy).

THE FLIGHT Waiting at each seat was an adorable sardine tin (not a real one, but a look alike), which served as the amenity kit. They come in a variety of different colors making them great collectors’ items for frequent fliers. I have four myself! Once in the air, the carts rolled down the aisle offering mixed nuts and a choice of Portuguese wines, cocktails, or soft drinks. I tried a Portguese vinho verde, which was delicious, especially after sampling them all week during my stay in Portugal visiting various vineyards.

The meal service followed with a three-course service including an appetizer of seafood. I selected the pasta for my main entrée, but it came with ham (there was no vegetarian option like on my outbound flight). Lesson learned to pre-order a veggie meal. Dessert was tasty and came with both sweets and savory cheese that was quite fragrant to say the least. Portuguese cheeses are a new favorite of mine. TAP Portugal is partnering with Michelin-starred chefs to launch a new “Taste the Stars” program to showcase some of the country’s most renowned chefs. Inflight meals in business class will include at least one dish from their highly sought-after menus.

ARRIVAL The entertainment options were numerous on the touch-screen system in front of me, but I opted to nap instead on the flat bed with eyeshades in full force. Our ontime touchdown was a nice welcome home, and TAP Portugal parks its planes at terminal five, home of codeshare partner JetBlue giving travelers endless connections cross the U.S.
