These six routes are getting Delta’s newly retrofitted Boeing 777s early this year

Delta Air Lines is due to begin flying its newly retrofitted Boeing 777 aircraft on six of its routes beginning March 1 this year, with passengers now able to book the airline’s newest seat products across all four classes.

The US carrier has been embarking on a US$100 million fleet-wide renovation of its 777 aircraft to update them with a four-class set up featuring its newest seats, notably the enclosed business class Delta One Suites and premium economy Delta Premium Select product, both of which debuted on its Airbus A350-900 in November 2017.

The revamped 777s also have retained their nine-across configuration in economy class (Main Cabin), rather than the growing industry standard of 10-abreast seating, and feature the largest seat-back screens in the airline’s fleet at 18.5 inches.

Four of its 777s have already been retrofitted with the new seats, while the remaining 14 will be undergoing work this year. Delta currently operates eight 777-200ERs and ten 777-200LRs in its fleet.

Tickets for all four classes on board the newly refitted aircraft went on sale on January 5, for flights starting between March 1 and April 5 on the following routes, though some have been available to book prior to this.

From Minneapolis/St Paul to:

  • Tokyo Haneda – March 1
  • Paris – March 1
  • Seoul – April 1

From Atlanta to:

  • Tokyo Narita – March 1
  • Paris – March 1

From Los Angeles to:

  • Sydney – April 5

For business class passengers, the retrofitted 777s provide Delta’s new fully flat, enclosed Delta One Suites.


The seats are based on UK-based manufacturer Thompson Aero’s Vantage XL seat product, the same design notably used by Qantas for its B787-9 Dreamliner, among others. Unlike the Qantas seats, however, Delta’s offer a sliding door, making them an enclosed suite. Seats are laid out in a 1-2-1 configuration enabling direct aisle access to all passengers in the cabin.

Delta Premium Select, meanwhile, is laid out in a 2-4-2 configuration and seats have a pitch of 38 inches and a width of 18.5 inches. Passengers also receive an amenity kit in Delta Premium Select.

Delta’s 777 retrofit forms part of a wider multi-billion-dollar investment in its onboard customer experience, including new seatback entertainment systems, free mobile messaging, wifi across the majority of flights, new serviceware and bedding, and the ability to pre-select chef-curated meals, among others enhancements.
