Air Demand Rises in June

Airline Reporting Corp’s data shows largest monthly ticket sales growth since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic

Air ticket sales jumped 337 percent from May to June, according to the latest data from Airlines Reporting Corp., the highest monthly sales growth since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. However that number still represents a major decline in year over year demand.

Total air tickets sold in June by US-based travel agencies were down 90.5 percent over the same period a year ago, showing a slight improvement over May when demand was off 95.2 percent compared to May 2019.

Compared with 2019, the total number of passenger trips settled by ARC in June was down 76 percent, with US domestic trips off 72 percent year over year.

The average US roundtrip ticket price decreased from $512 in 2019 to $374 in June 2020. Ticket prices are likely to remain low for some time, as demand continues to be soft even as airlines globally continue to add capacity.
