American Airlines has announced it is the first US carrier to offer pre-flight testing for passengers on all domestic flights to states and territories with COVID-19 travel restrictions. The at-home test kits are available for purchase through LetsGetChecked for travel on or after December 12.

The at-home COVID-19 test kit costs $129 from letsgetchecked.com which the company recommends order 5 or more days prior to travel. The self-administered uses a nasal swab, and some destinations may require the test to be monitored during an observation call.

Results of the PCR lab analysis are posted to the traveler’s secure online site, usually within 48 hours of the lab receiving the test on average.

Current cities, states and territories with COVID-19 travel restrictions include:

Alaska

Connecticut

District of Columbia

Chicago

Hawaii

Maine

Maryland

Massachusetts

New Hampshire

New York

Pennsylvania

Puerto Rico

Rhode Island

Vermont

“We’ve made great strides to help open international travel with our testing partners, and we recognize the need for similar domestic travel solutions,” said Alison Taylor, chief customer officer for American Airlines. “As travel requirements continue to quickly evolve, we’re simplifying the research and COVID-19 testing fulfillment process for an overall more seamless travel experience.”

American Airlines was among the first US carriers to launch pre-travel testing in October and has been aggressively expanding its international testing program since, including most recently running a trial of a three-test protocol on transatlantic flights in coordination with British Airways and the oneworld alliance.
