American Offers Pre-Flight COVID-19 Tests on Miami-Santiago Service

The airline is also trying out its new VeriFLY health pass mobile app

American Airlines has announced that, beginning Dec. 7, it will start offering pre-departure, at-home COVID-19 testing for passengers traveling between Miami International and Santiago, Chile.

Testing must be completed within 72 hours prior to departure. The test, which is being offered in partnership with LetsGetChecked, is an FDA-authorized nasal swab with PCR lab analysis.

American has been expanding its pre-flight testing strategy since its introduction in mid-October. In addition to being part of Hawaii’s pre-travel testing program, the airline has collaborated with a number of foreign governments to offer the service.

In addition, the Miami-Santiago flights will also give the carrier an opportunity to conduct a trial for its VeriFLY health pass mobile app. According to the airline, the app “is designed to help travelers understand coronavirus documentation requirements and enable them to securely store and display their test results digitally.” The app can be used on both ends of the trip.

Carlos Liscano, vice president of operations for Miami, said that as the carrier continues to reopen travel in Latin America and the Caribbean, it has been looking for ways to simplify the customer’s travel experience.

American operates one daily flight between Miami and Santiago, employing a Boeing 777-200ER.
