Amtrak Pacific Surfliner Partners with Lysol’s Parent Company

Cleaning and disinfection protocols will launch in stations along the Surfliner route before expanding across the Amtrak network

The Los Angeles–San Diego–San Luis Obispo Rail Corridor Agency (LOSSAN) which manages the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner,  is partnering with RB, the parent company of Lysol, to develop comprehensive cleaning and disinfection protocols along the 351-mile coastal route.

The partnership will launch in stations served by Pacific Surfliner trains before expanding across the Amtrak network. However neither Amtrak nor LOSSAN responded to inquiries as to when these initiatives will roll out.

RB will supply Amtrak with EPA-approved disinfecting solutions, including those proven to be effective against the SARS-CoV2, the virus that causes COVID-19. LOSSAN will use these products in high-touch and high-traffic areas at select stations with plans to make it available onboard trains.

The partnership supplements other Amtrak Pacific Surfliner health and safety protocols, which include face covering requirements and onboard filtration systems with a four- to five-minute fresh air exchange rate.

In addition, the Amtrak app lets riders purchase contactless eTickets and receive push notifications. The app has also recently been updated to let riders to do a real-time search to see which trains have the fewest seats booked to allow for more social distancing.

The Pacific Surfliner’s route runs through San Diego, Orange, Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties, serving 27 stations. It is the busiest state-supported intercity passenger rail route in the United States, with 26 daily trains and annual ridership of nearly 3 million.
