ANA Suspends 16 International Routes
New York, San Francisco, San Jose and LA are among the US gateways affected by the cuts
All Nippon Airways says its summer schedule will suspend 16 international routes when it begins on March 28. The latest round of cancellations include the carrier’s services from Tokyo Narita to New York, San Francisco, and Taipei.
ANA, which is Japan’s largest airline, says it will cancel its Osaka Kansai to Hong Kong service as well.
The Star Alliance carrier will also postpone the launch of new routes from Tokyo Haneda to Istanbul, Milan, Moscow, San Jose, and Stockholm, until October 31 at the earliest. The new destinations were originally scheduled to launch last summer.
Citing the continued impact of border restrictions and quarantine measures for prompting the cuts, the airline says it will also reduce services from Tokyo Haneda to Bangkok, Los Angeles, and Sydney.
Although the airline says significant changes are unlikely, it will continue to “monitor demand trends and resume or increase flights on a monthly basis” across its domestic and international network.
The carrier says more of its existing long-haul flights will be operated aboard the smaller and more cost-effective Boeing 787, following a decision last year to retire half of its Boeing 777 fleet.
The carrier is currently operating just 20 percent of its usual flights.
