Delta Develops Airport Safety Barriers
Plexiglass shields for check-in lobbies, departure gates and other spaces were created in-house by Delta’s Flight Products team
To help prevent the spread of coronavirus at its airport check-in lobbies, departure gates and Sky Club counters, Delta Air Lines has introduced a specially designed and custom built plexiglass safety barrier for use in these areas.
Responding to the need to create and deploy these safety barriers in the shortest time possible, the airline looked in-house to its Delta Flight Products subsidiary.
The Flight Products team quickly created the design, worked with Airport Customer Service teams to test installation at the airline’s Atlanta Hub and is now manufacturing up to 150 barriers a day.
Installations at all check-in lobbies and departure gates is expected to be completed at US hub airports by June 1, and at all US locations in the weeks following. Delta Sky Clubs will be done this summer and Delta also intends to install the barriers at airports outside the US in the weeks ahead.
During the pandemic, Delta Flight Products has shifted its manufacturing capabilities to make face shields for medical professionals and has worked with Delta TechOps to produce a military transport pod for the US Air Force.
The Delta-designed airport lobby and gate safety barriers are part of the airline’s efforts to add layers of safety and cleanliness at airports and aboard aircraft for customers and employees alike. Delta says it has committed to its new clean standards for the long term, during the COVID-19 crisis and beyond.
