Delta Giving Passengers a Waiver in Wake of Extreme Weather Trends

As severe weather frequently threatens to disrupt flight schedules or airport operations, Delta is now issuing  ‘weather waivers’ that allow customers the flexibility to make a one-time change to their travel plans without incurring a change fee. Waivers are issued to customers who have travel planned to, from, or through affected cities within a designated period of time.

A weather waiver does not necessarily indicate that there has been a change in the status of a specific flight – it is only an indication of challenging weather forecast in a particular city or group of cities with the potential to impact flights.

Customers are always encouraged to check their specific flight status on Delta.com or the Fly Delta Mobile App. Customers can also get updates sent directly to their mobile device or by email with One-Time Flight Notification.

How does a weather waiver get issued?

When Delta’s team of meteorologists forecast potential flight-impacting weather, teams in the airline’s Operations and Customer Center in Atlanta decide if a weather waiver is necessary – keeping customers top of mind during this process.

Once posted to delta.com, customers with travel through a city listed will receive a notification of the waiver via SMS messaging. Customers will be guided from there through the process of making changes to their itinerary, should they choose to do so.

Customers can take advantage of a waiver by visiting “My Trips” on delta.com after clicking “Modify Flight,” while in some cases, customers may be required to contact Reservations.
