Delta Resumes Limited US-London Flights
Carrier says cargo demand is prompting a return to three times weekly LHR-DTW service starting May 23
Delta Air Lines has announced the resumption of flights between London Heathrow and Detroit beginning on May 23. The carrier said that its three times weekly service would operate aboard a 767-300 aircraft, which will also has a cargo capacity of 26 tons.
Delta said restarting the LHR-DTW flights “has been driven by an increase in cargo demand between the UK and United States during the COVID-19 pandemic.” Cargo will be carried between London and Chicago, via Detroit; however the passenger service will only be on the transatlantic leg.
London-Detroit service operates on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, while DTW-LHR flies on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The flights will operate from Heathrow Terminal 2, since Terminal 3 is currently closed.
“Keeping global supply chains open is more important now than ever and these new services will enable suppliers to meet the needs of their customers,” said Shawn Cole, vice president Delta Cargo.
“We’re receiving daily requests for shipments of medical supplies as well as goods that keep businesses in operation. By also opening these services to passengers, we can facilitate essential travel between the UK and United States.”
Delta has inaugurated a number of measures to ensure the safety of its customers, including the sanitizing aircraft before every flight, capping capacity to ensure onboard spacing, and requiring employees and customers to wear face masks or coverings inflight.
