Marriott International has announced Nov. 9 as the date for the soft launch for its first Edition hotel in Reykjavik, Iceland. The property, offering 253 guestrooms and suites, is located on the harborside adjacent to Harpa, the city’s concert hall and conference center, and is minutes from the shopping street Laugavegur in downtown Reykjavik.
The double-entrance lobby is accessible via the pedestrianized Harpa plaza or the harbor, and features basalt stone flooring and an immersive 3D digital artwork of green and purple dancing waves inspired by the Northern Lights. The hotel’s façade features timber that has been charred using shou sugi ban, the ancient Japanese technique.
Dining venues include the restaurant and café Tides on the ground floor, which is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Tolt is an intimate bar that serves cocktails using local Icelandic spirits. Meanwhile The Roof on the seventh floor has a wrap-around seasonal outdoor terrace and serves dishes such as grilled flatbreads, toasted sandwiches and salads.
The Reykjavik Edition has been designed by local architecture firm T.ark and New York-based studio Roman and Williams, with guidance from the Ian Schrager Company design.
The hotel’s 253 rooms and suites feature window-facing beds to make the most of the view, and some include outdoor terraces. The monochrome bathrooms are furnished with a white marble vanity and custom Le Labo toiletries with Edition’s exclusive scent.
Meetings and events spaces include flexible studios, a boardroom with natural light and a grand ballroom with pre-function space. Leisure facilities include a gym and spa with three treatment rooms, a hammam, steam room, sauna and plunge pool offering hydrotherapy, plus a spa bar with snacks like volcano bread with black lava salt.
“Reykjavik is a really cool, young city – perfect for our brand,” commented Ian Schrager, founder of Edition. “We think this is Reykjavik’s time and we’re right here at the very heart of it and at the perfect time.”
The Reykjavik Edition brings to 12 the number of hotels under the brand around the world including two in New York which reopened this spring, plus London, Miami Beach, West Hollywood, Barcelona, Shanghai and Sanya in China, Abu Dhabi, Bodrum and Tokyo.
More Edition hotels set to open soon include Riviera Maya and Tampa in North America, Rome and Madrid in Europe, Dubai and Doha in the Middle East, and a second Toyko property.
As one of Marriott’s brands, Edition hotels are part of the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program.
