Frontier Airlines Heads to EWR with a $15 Flight Sale

No frills flyer, Frontier Airlines, is filling up slots left by Southwest Airlines at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) with 15 nonstop routes, on sale today for $15. The new routes include the only low-cost, nonstop options from EWR to Cancun, Mexico; Chicago; Dallas; Denver; Miami; Punta Cana, Dominican Republic; Phoenix; Raleigh, N.C., and San Juan. In addition, Frontier will offer the only nonstop, cross-country option to Ontario, Calif., opening an affordable, convenient option for travel to the Los Angeles area.

Frontier’s flights from Newark will operate entirely outside the delay prone afternoon hours, and include the airline’s policies for allowing customers to take advantage of the airline’s unique Kids Fly Free offer. Bookings must be made on flyfrontier.com. To take advantage of the promotion, customers must book by 11:59 pm EST today for nonstop travel. Fares are valid Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2019, through Feb. 12, 2020, with blackout dates of Nov. 22 through Dec. 2, 2019, and Dec. 20, 2019, through Jan. 6, 2020. Fares are one way and do not require roundtrip purchase.

The slots at EWR became available as Southwest Airlines announced last month that it would be pulling out of Newark to consolidate its service at New York’s LaGuardia Airport. Southwest currently manages 20 daily departures from Newark to 10 cities, including Baltimore, Chicago, Denver and Phoenix but admits they did not perform well on the balance sheet.

Frontier, which likes to call itself the “Greenest Airline in the Industry” – mostly because of the lack of services, amenities and strict baggage policies it maintains as a low cost carrier, operates some 90 A320-family aircraft and has the largest A320neo fleet in the U.S., which allows for greater fuel-efficiencies, compared to previous models. Frontier’s seating configuration, weight-saving tactics, and baggage process have all contributed to the airline’s average of 39% fuel savings compared to other U.S. airlines (fuel savings is based on Frontier Airlines 2018 fuel consumption per seat-mile compared to the weighted average of major U.S. airlines).

“Frontier is proud to introduce a new class of service for all of our customers, ‘Green Class,’” Frontier CEO Barry Biffle said at the Boyd Group’s International Aviation Forecast Summit held in Las Vegas this week. “We don’t have the weight of entertainment systems because customers like to travel with their own devices and can download their entertainment ahead of time. We don’t have the problem of onboard food as we are a farm-to-seat airline – the passengers bring their own farm as their own food they choose to bring on the flight.”

Frontier already serves the region with flights to Trenton, New Jersey, and Philadelphia. As Newark is a major hub for United, Frontier won’t be a major player and will not be the only domestic low-cost carrier as Spirit Airlines also offers flights out of Newark. But, according to Biffle, “We have the lowest costs in the United States.”
