Hotel Check: Hoodoo Curio Collection

Background Launched in 2014, Hilton’s Curio Collection is a select group of distinctive four and five star hotels in key markets that give travelers opportunities for local discovery and authentic experiences. As a Curio Collection by Hilton property, the Hoodoo Moab offers plenty of both.

Where Is It? The hotel is within walking distance to great dining and shopping in Moab. The drive to Arches National Park takes about ten minutes.

What’s It Like? This boutique hotel, which opened in 2019, demonstrates plenty of regional character. I especially liked the lobby lamp posts that resembled hoodoos (tall columns of weathered rock) seen in the state’s many national parks. These, obviously, inspired the hotel’s name. The carpeting resembled the red-rock formations in the nearby parks, and western-inspired touches in the public areas added to the atmosphere. Due to COVID-19, several precautions were in place including mask requirements inside, social distancing signage, and Hilton’s CleanStay partnership with Lysol. This includes nearly a dozen thoroughly cleaned touchpoints, all outlined via in-room signage, plus a door seal that confirms no one has entered the room since it was sanitized.

Room Facilities  Guest rooms were slick in design with leather armchairs, wide work desks with ample power outlets (also bedside), Keurig coffeemakers with Starbucks coffee and refrigerators for keeping my road trip snacks cold. All-white bathrooms, behind sliding barn doors, have enormous shower stalls and above-counter sinks shaped like some of the rock formations in the nearby national park. Beekman 1802 toiletries were on the vanity and in the shower. Families will appreciate bonuses like laundry machines and an ice machine that also dispenses filtered water. Smart Water bottles in guest rooms are complimentary for Hilton Honors elite members.

Restaurants and Bars Josie Wyatt’s Grille is the main restaurant serving three meals a day in a bright dining room and on the pool patio. The international menu had a nice range of cuisine including sandwiches, salads, and some creative dishes like a vegetarian stew of coconut milk with charred cauliflower, vegetables, and chickpeas that sounded really good. The s’mores bowl dessert is sure to be a family favorite.

Leisure Facilities  The fitness center features plentiful equipment to keep guests fit. although most are probably getting a good workout from hiking in the nearby national parks instead. The pool is an entertaining gathering spot for guests with a waterfall, splashing fountains and whirlpool. Bar service from the nearby restaurant is an option for guests, and at night, the nearby firepits are a great place for happy hour.

Business and Meetings Facilities  There are a few small meeting rooms on the second floor, all with natural light. A business center with free printing is open to all guests. Hilton Honors Diamond members also have reserved parking spaces, which is a nice touch.

Verdict This is the most upscale hotel in Moab and balances laid-back luxury with local design. It’s a great way to splurge after a day exploring the national parks.
