WHERE IS IT: Directly on Gran Via, this hotel enjoys superlative views and one of the best locations in town thanks to the convenient metro station just outside the front door. Ideal for both business and leisure travelers, this is a star of a hotel thanks to its easy walking distance to all tourist hot spots and many corporate offices.

WHAT’S IT LIKE? The small reception area welcome guests with sufficient seating and porter service although arrivals are directed to the sit-down reception desk upstairs. Two elevators take guests to the comfortable and modern rooms where they will find everything they need for an ideal stay. The contemporary décor and hip style surprised me given the historic façade of this beautiful building. Bottled water and fresh fruit (plus some sweet snacks) are available near reception.

ROOM FACILITIES: Guest rooms enjoy massive windows that open for fresh air. The plush bedding with a variety of pillow sizes and bedside power outlets were just what I needed after a long day of traveling. The building’s history means that rooms vary in size and exposure. Among the best are the corner units that have views of Gran Via (Madrid’s version of Broadway), many of which enjoy balconies. Flat-screen cable TVs, free wireless Internet, pillow menus, and small sitting areas are among the welcoming aspects of each room. Minibars add free Nespresso machines plus a hot water kettle. Complimentary bottled water and attentive turndown service signal the luxury focus of the hotel. Room sizes vary, and suites tack on substantial living space although any room with a balcony will earn accolades from guests.

RESTAURANTS AND BARS: The top-floor restaurant provides sensational panoramic views of Madrid with a menu that begins with Spanish specialties at breakfast and continues with international fare throughout the day. What draws locals and tourists most, however, is the rooftop bar and terrace, which during warmer weather is among the city’s best.

LEISURE FACILITIES: Massage services are available, and a jog along this entertaining street is supreme to any gym in the world (watch out, it’s hillier than you think).

BUSINESS AND MEETING FACILITIES: Free wireless Internet works everywhere, and small gatherings between colleagues on the rooftop terrace can be especially rewarding with those amazing views.

VERDICT: With this amazing location comes high expectations, which are exceeded thanks to conscientious management and a clever design team that has transformed a historic building into something new and exciting. Gran Via is home to many hotels, but this is one of its most notable thanks to its angled position being one of the only to offer such sweeping views of the street’s famed likes and activity.
