Marriott opens twin hotels at New York church site

The former Christ Church on West 36th Street in Manhattan is now home to a pair of Marriott hotel properties

The facade of the former Christ Church on West 36th Street in Manhattan is now home to a pair of Marriott hotel properties — a Fairfield Inn and Springhill Suites.

Located at 338 W. 36th St. in the Garment District, the hotels share space within the Gothic walls of the former Presbyterian church built in 1905. Retained architectural elements include a windowed chapel wall and the street-facing facade.

The Fairfield Inn and Suites New York Manhattan/Times Square South has 286 rooms and the SpringHill Suites New York Manhattan/Times Square South has 284 rooms.

Both offer free hot breakfast with stays and rates starting in the mid-$200 range. Shared amenities include the Bar 1905 bistro/bar, 2,000 square feet of meeting space, and a fitness center.

The church opened in what was then an impoverished neighborhood and provided a range of social services to the community as well as worship services. Attached to the chapel was a four-story chapel house with meeting spaces, a gymnasium, and even a bowling alley in the basement.

Over the years, Christ Church has hosted theatre performances, union meetings, school classrooms, and, now, travelers visiting New York City.
