Motel One Debuts in New York City

German hotel chain takes over operations of a former Courtyard by Marriott near the World Trade Center

Motel One, a German budget hotel chain, has announced the addition of its first US property, a former Courtyard by Marriott hotel in New York City. The group took over operations on July 21 and is planning “an extensive refurbishment and rebranding” of the hotel.

The property is located close to the World Trade Center complex, and was operating as a Courtyard hotel since 2016. Following an agreement with Union Investment, Motel One signed a 20-year lease on the property.

According to a statement from Union Investment, “The agreement with the previous operator was terminated prematurely by Union Investment.”

Motel One launched in 2000 with a portfolio of budget properties near German highways. Currently the group has around 75 hotels across Europe, including city center properties in London, Paris, Berlin and Zurich.
