Remain on the Road: 4 Ways to Get Your License Suspended

A car is a lifesaver if you regularly need to travel from A to B on business.

It can help you skip public transport and have fun on the open road as you drive from one meeting to another. Unfortunately, your life and career could be turned upside down, should you lose your license.

If you want to ensure you never have your driving privileges taken away, which could result in you losing your job, brush up on your knowledge by reading the four ways you can get your license suspended.

1.     Accumulating Too Many Driving Record Points

Every time you commit a traffic violation, your state’s DMV will automatically record the points onto your driving record. Different states will use different methods, as some will accumulate the points to different traffic violation codes, while other states will take action based on the seriousness of the violation.

Accumulating points on your driving record will not only increase your insurance premiums, but it could lead to your license being either suspended or revoked.

2.     Receiving a DUI

As alcohol can impair a person’s judgment, it can be easy to think you’re capable of driving when you’re not. That fun night out with your partner, friends or colleagues could, however, turn to a lifetime of regret should you be convicted of a DUI (driving under the influence). While state law can vary, every US state will charge any person over the age of 21 years old with a DUI if they have a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .08% or more.

There are numerous sentencing options for a DUI, such as:

  • An ignition interlock device
  • A DUI school and addiction treatment programs
  • Revoking or suspension of your license
  • Car impoundment
  • Incarceration

You will, however, have a right to appeal any of the above punishments. Depending on your career, this could lead to a loss of your livelihood, and might force you to spend your life on public transport.

3.     Failing to Appear in Court

Ignorance is not bliss when it comes to traffic violations. If you fail to appear in court or not pay for a traffic ticket, you’ll either have the ticket fine increased or your license will be suspended in many states. In extreme cases, it could result in a warrant for your arrest and points might be added onto your license.

4.     A Failure to Pay Child’s Support

Unfortunately, there are some parents who might fail to provide their children will financial support. Thankfully, the US government holds a parent accountable for their absence, as all 50 states can revoke, restrict, or suspend all licenses for a failure to pay child support. This not only covers driver’s licenses, but it also extends to professional licenses (such as a law license), occupational licenses (doctor)and recreational licenses (fishing and hunting licenses). However, every state will have its own criteria, which will determine the amount of arrears a parent will have to pay for the return of their license.

As mentioned, state law will vary depending on the violation, so it’s important to understand your legal requirements before hitting the road.
